György Surányi

Professor of Finance, Corvinus University, Budapest; former Regional Head of Central Eastern Europe, Intesa Sanpaolo Group; former Chairman, Central European International Bank (CIB); former President of the National Bank of Hungary

György Surányi is currently Professor of Finance at Corvinus University in Budapest. He was Regional Head of Central & Eastern Europe at Intesa Sanpaolo and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Central European International Bank Ltd. in Budapest between May 2001 and March 2014. He is also former Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Privredna Banka Zagreb, VUB, Bratislava and Bancaintesa ad Beograd. Between 1995 and 2001, Dr. Surányi was President of the National Bank of Hungary and also Governor for the IMF, a return to the positions he held for the first time between 1990 and 1991. For three years from 1992, Dr. Surányi was Co-Chief Executive Officer at Central-European International Bank Ltd. Between 1989 and 1990, he served as State Secretary at the National Planning Office, following a year spent as Counselor to the Deputy Prime Minister. In 1986-87, Dr. Surányi worked as a consultant at the World Bank in Washington D.C. after spending nine years as a Research Fellow and Head of Department at the Financial Research Institute, Budapest. Dr. Surányi graduated in 1977 with an MA from the University of Economics in Budapest. He then received his Doctorate in Economics from the same institution in 1979. Dr. Surányi was also awarded a Ph.D. in 1986 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, and a Dr Habil. in 1996 from the University of Economics in Budapest. Dr. Surányi is a Professor of Finance at Corvinus University of Economics and Central European University in Budapest. He is a Member of the PCG – Principles Consultative Group, and of the Emerging Markets Advisory Council, too, both are IIF initiated groups of international experts supporting emerging market financing. Dr. Suranyi is also a Member of the Advisory Board of an independent agency (Foundation of Effective Governance) aiming to advise the authorities to reform the Ukrainen economy.
